2015 Short on Words

“Every Picture Tells a Story…Don’t It?”

Northville, Mich. – Calling all authors! The fourth annual Short on Words competition is underway. Dr. William Demray has unveiled the photo selections that are the centerpiece of the competition – the inspiration for authors of all ages: “As in the past, I tried to select photos that have a story all their own. Of course, creative minds will tell a much more lively tale than I can imagine. Every year the clever interpretations amaze me. Rod Stewart got it right, every picture tells a story, don’t it?”
The contest works like this: writers take a look at the photos in the appropriate age category – choose one, or more – sit down and writer 1,500 words or less in a short story or a poem that addresses the photo of choice – use the criteria guideline to submit the written piece with a $10 entry fee for a chance at $100!
Preservation Dental is the office of Dr. William Demray and the proud sponsor of the competition. Short on Words is the literature arm of Northville’s Arts & Acts Festival. The contest has been well received across the state of Michigan. Authors have previously entered from the neighboring communities of Farmington Hills, Livonia, Novi, Plymouth and South Lyon…and from as far away as Bloomfield Hills, Grand Rapids, Gibraltar, Rockford and Troy.

Aspiring authors can get a closer look at the photos (larger in size) on display at Preservation Dental, plus several Northville businesses - Starring the Gallery, Northville Art Gallery, Van Dam’s and Stampeddler. They are also available for viewing at the Northville Art House and the Northville Library.
There are two (2) age group considerations: authors in the adult competition must be 18 years of age or older; the young author competition is open to authors 17 years of age and younger. The criteria are the same for both age groups, however, the photo selection is different and the featured photos are clearly marked for the appropriate age category. (See enclosure.)  Submissions that do not address one of the designated photos will be disqualified. Entries must be postmarked no later than April 17, 2013.
The cash awards for this year are: 1st Place adult contest winner $100; 1st Place young adult contest winner $100; 2nd Place in both age categories $50; 3rd place in both age categories $25. There will be additional prizes awarded at the discretion of the judges**. All entries will be available for public review during the festival.  A reception to honor all the authors will be held at Genitti’s Hole-in-the-Wall on Friday – June 19, 2015 – 6:30 p.m. Selected readings will be presented and winners will be announced at the reception. Preservation Dental, the office of Dr. William S. Demray, will host the event. (**All decisions by the judges are final.)
