2012 Short on Words Awards


And the winners are…


Friday, June 22, 2012 - The winners of the first Short on Words competition (part of the annual Arts & Acts Festival in Northville, MI) were announced during an author reception at the Northville Art House hosted by Dr. William Demray.

1st place ($150) went to J. S. Spence of Livonia, MI for his poem entitled “Remember Me”. Dr. Demray presented Mr. Spence with the professionally mounted photograph that inspired his work. He was also invited to select another one of Dr. Demray’s photos that were on exhibit as one of the three that will be used in the 2013 Short on Words competition.

2nd place ($100) went to Gene Brady of Northville, MI for his short story “Swimming to Swim” with a surprise ending!

3rd place ($50) went to Susan Glover of Westland, MI for her poem titled “Sage Advice”.

Honorable Mentions went to: Karolynn Pargo of Dearborn Heights, MI for her Haiku about the man whom she described as having “jazz hands”; Natalie Lomske of Northville, MI for her short story titled “Whispering Waters”; Kevin Griffin of Plymouth, MI for his poem “Hut” which exhibited a perfect pairing of words and image; Anne Chandler of Troy for her short story titled “My Refuge” and Frances Gurk of Garden City, MI for her poem titled “Retreat”.

There were two special awards: The Young Author Award went to Edie Jones, age 12 of Northville, MI for her short story titled "Hopeful" and the SMS (Short Message Service) Award went to Joan Rayford of Livonia, MI for her entry IMHO* - Internet speak for In My Humble Opinion.

Thanks to our 2012 judges. The call for entry for the 2013 Short on Words competition will begin in January, 2013. Preservation Dental, office of Dr. William S. Demray will once again sponsor the event.
